I just got back from a fabulous vacation in Key West and it was only upon returning and sitting down in front of my overflowing in-basket that I realized how easy it is to have tunnel vision about one's surroundings. How we become so accustomed to our environment that we forget that it really is five o'clock somewhere. When I landed in that tropical paradise, it hit me: "We aren't in Kansas anymore, Dorothy." The captain of a 50 foot sailboat who took us to a snorkeling site was probably in his early forties and he was telling us that he was a financial consultant for a major hospital in Pennsylvania before moving to Key West twelve years ago and that it is very common to find "natives" who left a perfectly comfortable job somewhere else to fulfill their lifelong passions in sunny 80 degree, carefree and EXPENSIVE utopias. Nearly every single person who worked in the hotel where I was staying had an accent and a name tag stating their countries of origin; meaning that every person who worked there, at some point, left their comfort zones all over the world and threw caution to the wind. Speaking of wind, people there still talk about hurricane Wilma from a couple of years back. Now there are very few signs of Wilma's devastation; although I'm sure the insurance industry in Florida hasn't forgotten about it. Looking at the bright side of coming back to twenty-one degree, dreary skies: I can find great, comprehensive affordable homeowners' coverage. Try finding that in Oz! Oh, by the way, I think I found that lost shaker of salt.
