In The Office by Michele Kennedy

We have a new bowling alley in our area. I shouldn't call it an "alley" because it's really so much more. I used to work in a bowling alley in high school many, many, many, moons ago. This new place blows the rest of the bowling establishments out of the water. We all met up there after work last week for one of our "Stuckey Outings". I walked in and my jaw dropped to the floor because of the sheer enormity of the place. In fact, if I hadn't heard the pins crashing from around the corner, I would have thought I was in the wrong place. The state-of-the-art restaurant/bar had flat screen TV's everywhere, pool tables and fireplaces. Across the entryway was a huge flashy arcade and just down the hall, there were over 76 bowling lanes,38 on each side! We were assigned three lanes where we mingled between couches and coffee tables and stand-up cocktail tables. We had pizzas set up on a dining table and our server didn't even have a cigarette hanging out of her mouth (like the ones did where I worked many, many, many, moons ago). Come to think of it, there wasn't any smoke at all in the whole place. The shoes even smelled good (don't ask me how I know that). We brought in prizes for top bowling average (Jerry) and top scoring game (Jerry) and we also gave out candy bars for gutter balls (to help soothe Libby's self esteem). We played 2 regular games and one "crazy bowl". The most fun for me was when Kerry had to stand with his feet apart at the foul line while I threw the ball between his legs. His face went white as a ghost as I released the ball just inches away. I felt powerful, like his fate was in my hands. I was nice though; he does, after all, sign my paycheck. You know its great how our society keeps upgrading things like faster technology, faster cars, bigger/better bowling alleys; but when it comes right down to it, you just roll the heavy ball at the pins and holler. BASIC FUN! I'll admit, bowling was one thing that I didn't think could be upgraded, but after our little outing, I realize that I was wrong!
