As I'm scraping the crisp blanket of ice off my windshield, and trying to keep my mind off the pain caused by tiny sleet crystals being whipped into my eyes, I can't help but wonder if Global Warming is just a hypothesis invented by Al Gore in order for him to collect all those awards. Come on, it's hard to believe that stuff when it's freezing and snowing and Darn! if we don't have to close down the office early so we can get home safely. This winter has been extra cold this year in St. Louis. I confess, I experience some inner turmoil when it snows because, on one hand, it's very pretty and if it's going to be cold, it might as well be pretty too. But on the other hand, I have to make sure the bill gets paid for plowing the snow in the parking lot and let me tell you, it isn't cheap! Speaking of not fun: around town there are businesses that, in order to advertise their specials, they have their employees stand outside with a sign and wave like cartoon idiots at passing cars. During this last bout of snow, I was sliding down the road and in the place of the embarrassed, waving oil change mechanics, there was a rotund snowman holding the sign. I had to laugh because you know those guys got paid to play in the snow and just imagine the conversation with their manager trying to sell that idea. I give them credit for making lemonade. We too made lemonade the day after our big snow storm. No, we didn't go out and make snowmen, (not that there's anything wrong with that) but we managed to get through the day with a skeleton crew. The funny part is, within a couple of days, we had record high temperatures for February and all that shoveling was for naught. No matter what, until about July or August, it's going to be hard to convince me of impending disaster caused by greenhouse gas concentrations effecting rising surface temperatures and the thermal inertia of the oceans, blah blah blah. Don't get me wrong I love the environment as much as anybody. I just like it a lot better in the warmer months.
