Several years back there was a Jim Carrey movie where his character’s entire life is broadcast on TV and he doesn’t know it, but everyone else in his life is just a cast member. He finds out at the end that his entire world is a big TV set. Cameras were hidden everywhere. I think that movie may have been the dawn of Reality TV domination in recent American culture. I don’t remember the movie breaking any box office records, yet somebody in Hollywood thinks we enjoy watching unknown people argue, brats throw temper tantrums, relationships fall apart, less-than-attractive hygiene-challenged drunks throwing punches. Shoot, if you want to see that, come on down to my family reunion. (I’m only half joking.)
Do you ever wonder if YOUR life is a reality show and everybody in your life is hired to interact with you by improvisation? Maybe that unfortunate water leak in the office was staged and the FedEx guy really meant to drop off the wrong package and maybe that declination on the account that you’ve been working on for two weeks is all just a joke. Maybe that Insured with the thickest, ugliest file doesn’t even really exist. Maybe your computer is programmed to freeze up every time you hit the “&” key. Maybe there are a million people watching your life everyday on daytime TV -laughing, crying and sympathizing with your daily Insurance plights. No, I don’t really think that Stuckey and Company is a TV set, seriously how could we find 19 Oscar-worthy actors working in Lake St. Louis? I’ll let you in on a secret though, just to be sure, on those “when it rains, it pours” days, I look deeply into every office plant and say “For Gosh sakes, change the channel you couch potatoes!”
