Sometime in his mid thirties, a group of us got together on a Saturday morning and cheered Dwight on as he flew past us on his bike. He had just completed the swim portion of the Lake St. Louis Triathlon. We had just enough time to hop in the car, drive to the other side of the lake to secure a spot near the end of the race, and to scream our heads off as he jogged across the finish line. Dwight had been training for months prior to the 2+ hour endurance race. Turns out, he has competed in a few more since then. He said that for the most recent one, he didn’t feel like he trained hard enough and so instead of competing, he decided to help out with handicap athletes. Dwight said he remembers assisting one guy getting ready for the swim event who showed enormous strength as he managed a quasi-butterfly stroke across the lake and the guy hadn’t even had much training prior to the race. It sounded like that story really inspired Dwight. I remember the look on Dwight’s face when he crossed the finish line that first year. Besides his face being really red, he looked relieved and exhausted. After he had time to catch his breath, I could tell how good he felt that he completed the whole thing and that we all were there too. That story continues to inspire me. Dwight and I are very close to the same age. We are both having a milestone birthday this year. (Although he wins that race on July 1st). You know, watching all the different people cross the finish line that summer day, just proves that physical training is pretty cut and dry, black and white: if you want these results, you do this, for this amount of time—but mental training is the real key to accomplishment. You put them both together and you’ve got yourself a winner!
