A nickname, according to Wikipedia, is defined as "a name of a person or thing other than its proper name." Some nicknames are given to shorten a lengthy name, some refer to terms of endearment, some are labeled from ridicule, and some are derived from stage names. Usually nicknames are adopted by friends or family during youth. My brother, for instance, went through that chunky middle school phase and was affectionately known as "Bubba or Bubs" by his friends. Then he hit a growth spurt and became tall, slender and athletic, but the name stuck. My sister, who's birth name is Suzanne, decided that she'd rather be called Renee and so she introduced herself to her third grade class as such and when my mom went to her parent conference, could not understand the teacher's fixation with talking about this "Renee" kid. Eventually, we figured it out. My sister is still called "Renee" by her friends and business associates and "Sue" by our family. Maggie, our ACE senior underwriter, like my sister, goes by her middle name and so does Terri, who takes care of policy issuance and, of course, Dwight. But you’re going to have to drag it out of them if you want to know their first names. When Chris Irvin joined us at Stuckey and Company in February 2005, we started calling him "Irv" now I have trouble referring to him as "Chris". Sometimes, we'll just yell out part of a name like: "Rach or Di or Kel or Linds, or Mags", but that doesn't work so well for all our employees with rhyming names: Kerry, Jerry, Terri and Mary. I still think you can't go wrong with the universal nickname: "Hey".
