Did you happen to catch the Today show episode when they interviewed Reverend Will Bowen from Kansas City? He was tired of his congregation complaining so he launched a program to swear off complaining, criticizing, gossiping or using sarcasm for 21 days. Each person who pledges wears a purple bracelet. If they catch themselves complaining, they must take off the bracelet and put it on the other wrist in order to raise awareness of their habitual behavior. It took the reverend three months to complete the program; although he claims that most people "graduate" near seven months, at which time they are issued a "Certificate of Happiness". I think this is a commendable effort, but I have to raise awareness about a couple of things myself. One: If we don't gripe, some of us will blow up...literally. Call it a girl thing if you want, or whatever, but we all need to blow off steam once in a while. Second: what is there left to talk about? There is only so much loveliness a person can take. Can you tell I was raised from a long line of chronic complainers? I would issue my mom the certificate if she could get through 21 minutes without complaining! I may have to challenge them to try it just so we can have fun trying to tick them off. Of course they'd probably make me try it too, but I wouldn't get anything done because I'd be complaining about having to switch my bracelet all day and what a vicious cycle that would be! I think I'll just skip it and go ahead and issue myself a "Certificate of Discontent". Did you happen to notice that the Reverend who launched the program was complaining about all the complaining?
