In The Office by Michele Kennedy

Thanksgiving will fall on November 27th next year. That’s really going to put a cramp in my Christmas shopping procrastination schedule for 2008. This year there are a few extra days to wait until the last minute to shop. For me, I think the pressure of finding the perfect gift to express the exact sentiment is almost overwhelming. For example, say you have to buy a present for your mother-in-law but, if you weren't related, there's no way you would spend your hard earned cash on such a fussy old sourball. But, since you are married to her son, you want to pick out something that says, "I really wish you would find something else to talk about other than how crunchy my kitchen floor is." Logically a broom for a gift would be ideal. It says, "pipe down, sweep and then hop on and take a ride outta here." Ah, but we must be nice, so we get her that sweatshirt with the cats silk screened on the front to match her five little hair puffs. Even though I describe a semi-hypothetical situation, the angst is real! You know, it's no wonder so many of us procrastinate when Christmas shopping. I asked around the office to find out who our resident procrastinators are. It was somewhat consoling to learn that I'm in good company; more than half of the office hasn't started shopping yet; including each and every one of the guys. I think guys sort of get a bum deal. Talk about pressure to get the perfect gift! He likes her, but not enough for jewelry, but more than socks; or if they're married, what could possible top last year's gift: the deluxe model carpet shampooer? I feel your pain, boys. Let me help you: a nice, classy looking picture frame. Bonus points if there's a picture inside of the two of you together. Double word score, if it's engraved with the title of your favorite song. Even picture frames work great as gifts for us sentimental moms. I'm going to let you in on a little secret, I'm actually 93.6% done Christmas shopping...my kids and nieces and nephew all asked for CASH (woo-hoo!) everybody else is getting a picture frame or a broom.
